Forest fires are a phenomenon that has become an increasing global threat. This phenomenon not only damages ecosystems, but also has serious impacts on air quality, human health and the global climate. The existence of forest fires is influenced by various factors, including climate change, deforestation and unsustainable agricultural practices. One of the main causes of forest fires is climate change. As the earth’s temperature continues to rise, dry periods are getting longer, creating ideal conditions for fires to occur. For example, in Indonesia, the dry areas of Sumatra and Kalimantan often experience large fires caused by deforestation to clear agricultural land. This practice, apart from eliminating flora and fauna habitat, also triggers greenhouse gas emissions which contribute to global warming. The impact of forest fires is very broad. On the one hand, fires produce smoke that spreads far into urban areas, worsening air quality and increasing the risk of respiratory diseases, especially among children and the elderly. Several studies show that smoke from forest fires can cause an increase in the number of cases of asthma and acute respiratory infections. On the other hand, forest fires also have an impact on biodiversity. Many species of flora and fauna have lost their habitat due to fire. Some endangered species, such as the Sumatran tiger and orangutan, depend on critical forest ecosystems for their survival. If forest fires continue to occur, the extinction rate of this species may increase. In addition to environmental impacts, forest fires cause significant economic losses. Countries that depend on forest resources, such as timber and non-timber forest products, suffer heavy losses. In 2019, Indonesia experienced economic losses of up to billions of US dollars due to forest fires, which resulted in a decline in the tourism and agricultural sectors. Solving the problem of forest fires requires an integrated approach. Mitigation efforts must be carried out through strengthening strict policies and regulations to stop illegal deforestation as well as increasing public awareness of the importance of forest conservation. Modern technology, such as satellite monitoring and drones, can also be used to detect fires early and prevent their spread. In an international context, cooperation between countries is very important. Countries that frequently experience forest fires, such as Australia, Brazil and Indonesia, need to share knowledge and resources to address this challenge effectively. Through global initiatives such as the Paris agreement, countries are expected to work together to maintain forest sustainability and combat climate change. Forest fires are not just a local problem but a global challenge that requires immediate attention and action from all parties. Education and involvement of local communities in conservation efforts is also very important. With collective awareness and the right actions, we can work to protect our forests and earth from the increasing threat of forest fires.
