Often, the best news story is one that’s timely and relevant. A war or stock market rout, celebrity death or controversy on a reality show often grabs readers and op-ed editors’ attention. Track what’s in the news and jump on topics when they arise; that way your article will be timely and a fresh news peg. As always, follow the inverted pyramid technique in writing your story; begin with the most important information–who, what, where, when, why and how–and then add more details.
